Great post here Gleb,

Understanding my habits, where they come from and how to change them has been one of the most enlightening experiences I have encountered.

As mentioned by Alastair , posting regularly has been a difficult habit to master. Early rising has been one that i have also tested and have noticed great benefits from doing so. However, there was a regression on that one even after the suggested 30 day period. I found I had to go a lot longer, more like 3 months to finally get engrained but I guess starting small helps develop positive habits.

Thanks for sharing

Thanks, Tim!

I also believe in consistency, but some habits like weekly reviews of my GTD lists or regular tidy-up on one of my workplaces don't really have to be a daily routine - so they're more challenging to stay regular with :)

When it comes to creating new habits I personally believe that consistecy is key, if it is one that is of benefit to you why not do it everyday?

I am also a strong believer in chain habits which make it easier to follow through on new challenges.

Gleb, excellent post. I too have had success with forming a habit in 30 days - I now wake up at 4:30 every morning and surprisingly feel great (most days!). Naming habits is new to me, I will have to try it out!

That's right - a carefully chosen (and therefore targeted) habit is not only much more useful, but also easier to maintain.

You know what if one can maintain a habit considered with the given goal you can assume that 50% of the task is completed and he just has to focus and it also helps in keeping the mind healthy.

Hi SpiKe!

I've found the 30 day to be a golden middle, but didn't realize this exact figure until Steve Pavlina suggested it in one of his posts.

Great article, I personally find there is a difference between starting out on habit building and the processes you go through days or weeks later when you are comfortable with the process. As you say most of the effort comes in that first period, though I'm curious about where you got the 30 day figure from?

Yes, that's what habits are good for!

Incidentally, losing 50 pounds happens to be one of my fitness goals! :) 30 pounds are already lost in a space of 5 months, and 30 more are well on their way ;)

Habits are definitely the most lifechanging things in the world. No matter what you want to accomplish, if you can break it down into baby steps and repeat them day after day after day you will get there.

I've realized that in my life without a habit of doing something over and over I never feel emotionally compelled to do it (like go to the gym), and usually just forget about it or use tiredness or something as an excuses not to go.

Habits are great for accomplishing huge goals. Like say you want to lose 50 pounds, at the start its seems like a HUGE task, but if you just go to the gym each and every day and run on the treadmill for a little bit more than the day before, that 50 pounds will melt away. It may not be instant, but if that habit keeps up, it will dissapear.

It's like a writer writing a huge book, they never intend to write it all at once but instead establish the habit of writing 1000 words day after day after day, the book practically writes itself.

Hey Alastair,

Great to see you here!

Yours is one of the most challenging habits, so you can be really proud when you succeed! And yes, you're right - your blog seems to be doing great at the moment. Just subscribed to it, I think the last time I looked at your site there was no blog, so it's a great discovery :)

Talk later! Stay in touch,
Gleb

Habits are essential to our development as a person. It made me aware of the things I prioritize, especially those that I form unconsciously. Thanks for sharing this wonderful post.

Hey Gleb!

Finally found your blog - nice place you got here!

I'm strongly in agreement. I realised last month that I was out of the habit of blogging regularly, and it's something that's important for me in business. So this month I set the goal of posting at least one post per day, each one a meaningful blogging tip. It's going well so far, and I'm pretty happy with the quality of what I've written. I'm hoping it's becoming a habit and I'll carry on past the 30 days!

Cheers,
Alastair.
