Great article Gleb.

You'll find that the more you share, the more you learn yourself. Even the things you teach, you'll understand them more deeply when you teach them, than if you keep them only in your head.

Regarding the fear of not being promoted, this can happen more often if you don't teach others what you know. It's logical that if you cannot be replaced by anyone, you'll not be moved from your position. The best policy is to train others.

Hoarding knowledge and information seems to be a good option to maintain one's importance in a group or a company. After all, people will need to consult again. But then, if knowledge is shared with others, a team spirit can be established.

"Being open with your team and freely sharing anything you know is one of the major signs of you being comfortable where you are."

I totally agree! Hoarding information and knowledge can be self-defeating and may even point to a person's deepest insecurities.

thanks for a great read. :D

Thanks, Jonathan!

Yes, scarcity mindset is behind all of this. Not all of us ever get rid of such way of thinking, but those who do are shocked at how much of a limitation it was.

I think a lot of people that fear sharing their knowledge have a scarcity mindset. They're in competition with everyone else and think if they share their ideas and "secrets" other people might have an advantage over them.

In reality, when you share with others, you gain their respect and admiration. And they're also more likely to help you in return.

Really great article. In many cases, lack of information is due to the companies structure. If employees are not treated popular and people are not recognized for their contributions, then it is more likely the information transfer will slow. The truth is that the people who you are the most afraid to share with, usually won't care enough to take advantage of it anyways.

My wife has been instrumental in getting me to start blogging and sharing my little bit of info. I have only been going a week. After my hand was broken damaging the tendons I had to put up my paint brushes after 20 years of painting. I felt lost, with no direction. But since I have started to blog I feel that purpose to get up everyday again.

I look forward to the future when my blogging has improved and my message and knowledge comes across effectively to my readers. So I just have to add don't be intimidated, grab that keyboard. Get started it might be hard in the beginning but I am sure your voice will find it's place.

I know that one very well, Lyman! :)

The way I fought my own doubts was asking people for topics which they would be interested in. I rarely supplied 100% unique information, but rather took the time to research and present information in my own interpretation.

Excellent article, Gleb. I've got another bugaboo that still occasionally pops up for me, although it may fall more under sharing ideas rather than knowledge.

The idea that we have nothing useful to share.

I used to suffer from it (and like I said, it still pops up occasionally), and I know that many others do.

Sometimes we honestly don't have anything new to share, but if we think we might and hold back, we are depriving both ourselves and others of possibly improving things.

Thanks again for the great article!

Gleb,

Excellent article, touching on so many important ideas. As the saying goes, "Knowledge is power" -- and the greatest power is in sharing knowledge, not withholding it.

In addition to workplace sharing among known colleagues, the Internet is the perfect vehicle for sharing wisdom, knowledge, and experience.

All the best,
Jeanie
