Celebrate Your Happy Days!

May 5, 2007 by Gleb Reys 8 Comments

Happy Days

With our lifestyle these days, we don’t always get to stop and celebrate a particularly good day or event. We just take such days for granted (I’ve worked so hard, and I deserve it), or make an excuse of not having enough time to even recognize them (this day is good, but look at the whole next week of projects, work and problems to solve!).

With an attitude like this, sooner than you might think, you lose the habit of noticing your happy days, and then each day is just as gray as another one – it all turns into a routine.

Well, not for me. I’m a very happy person. I smile and laugh a lot, and this helps me cope with whatever challenges a new day may bring. I hadn’t celebrated a good few days which, looking back now, I recognize as being ones of the happiest in my life, and that’s why I made a decision to stop this before it’s too late. I will not let any positive day go unnoticed, and I will celebrate every moment of happiness in my life.

Book Review: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

April 24, 2007 by Gleb Reys 7 Comments

I’ve read an amazing book last weekend – The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.

It’s hard to imagine someone not having heard about it – it’s been out for quite some time, and seems to be quite a publishing phenomenon, but just like everyone else who was really impressed, I feel compelled now to share my own thoughts and recommendations.

The Alchemist is a story of a shepherd boy following his dream. It’s a tale of faith, hope, power, courage, and, above all, wisdom one needs to fulfill his own dreams.

To realize one’s destiny is a person’s only obligation – this was said a few times in this book, and Paulo masterfully shows why and how this is true.

Breakthrough Project Management

Project Management

Last Thursday and Friday I was on a training called Breakthrough Project Management.

It was an on-site training, and Barry Flicker spent two days sharing his approaches to make project management straight-forward and most effective.

I greatly enjoyed the course, and will form a series of posts on project management in the nearest future, but for now I just want to mark this event and recommend you Barry as an excellent mentor with quite a unique training course.

I liked the way Barry presented common project management challenges, and the team games we had played were created in such a way that they perfectly highlighted the most usual problems you’re bound to see in any project.

One lesson learned once and for all is this: communication plays the most important part in any project.

That Which Is Measured, Improves

Improvement

As part of my fitness self-improvement program, a few months ago I have purchased a heart-rate monitor. Since then, I’ve been logging my training stats on a daily basis. It’s been one of the greatest motivators I’ve ever found.

Whatever I do in my training session, I always feel great just by looking at my stats now and then. It’s not like I didn’t know that I was burning calories before, but knowing the exact amount helps a lot.

This reminded me of a great phrase I first heard when I was working for Sun Microsystems: That Which Is Measured, Improves. This principle worked for me back then, and it still helps me a lot with many daily activities. Read on to find out how.
